Victory Light Children's Home

Gupta Picture 2Founder Danny & Viji Gupta

The Guptas desire to expand the Kingdom by  investing in the future generations of the Church and its mission in India. Their primary goal is to provide homeless & orphaned girls with a Christian family and home. In 1994, they started what would become their ministry, the Victory Light Children’s Home (Vijaya Deepam Children’s Home), by taking in two orphans from the street. As time passed they began to grow more compassion for the countless children needing homes. They decided to leave their successful business prospects and invest in creating a home for these children.

Today the family has grown to 15 girls ranging in ages 8 to 17. Children who had to be placed two to three years behind in their classes are now at grade level in one of the top schools in the city. They are star students and athletes in every class. Their dreams are to become doctors and nurses, teachers and architects. Even at this age they are preparing to be the future of India, and more importantly to be the future of the Church in India. Vijaya Deepam also provides accommodation and ground support for eight to ten short–term mission teams that include: teaching ministries, children ministries and medical camps.

It only takes $100 a month to sponsor and meet the full needs of one of these girls.

My Experience

I feel so special and protected by being here with good food, best clothes and a beautiful room. I feel I am a luckiest girl. At home I feel comfortable and happy and at school it is interesting and joyful. After coming here, I have learned to draw, paint, sing, dance and have won many prizes in sports at school.

If I weren’t here, I would have not been educated and would have not have dreamed of becoming a teacher.

Brief History

Aruna’s father died from taking drugs. She lived with her grandmother. She has not seen her mother’s face as she deserted her at a very young age due to poverty. She was referred to us by the local pastor who is ministering in the neighborhood.

My Experience

I am so lucky to be here and I feel that I have the best parents. They take care of me as their own child and have shown their complete love and care toward me and they are being a great support for me. They take care of all my needs and I am so grateful for their love and care. I feel so peaceful and secure here.

Only after coming here I discovered that I had the talent to sing. I also learned painting. I have also won prizes in sports. I have learned to speak in English and Tamil. When I grow up, I want to become a school teacher.

If I did not come here, I would be working as an agricultural labour for daily wages and I wouldn’t be able to go to school. I would not have had a safe and secure life. I would not have had a good family to take care of me. I would be deprived of proper food to eat and good clothing.

Brief History

Biba’s parents died from using excessive drugs. She was under the care of her grandmother. She had an older sister who was mentally challenged, she recently passed away. Her grandmother, who died recently, could not take care of the children as she was very old. She was referred to us by the local pastor in her village.

My Experience

The love I enjoy here from my mom & dad is so much that even my biological parents would not have showered upon me. The love is from within and surely it is from God above. They guide us in right way and pay a way for our bright future. And no favoritisms is showed by mom and dad, they treat us equally and advise us to be the best women that we can be with meekness and humility. They always remind us that our ambition does not take us to greater heights but our attitude.

After coming here, dad and mom helped me to explore the singing talent in me. I was also given an opportunity to sing in a C.D. I also won lot of prizes in sports and crafts due to the encouragement given by mom and dad. I also won the 1st prize for creativity in school.

I am very, very excited at the thought that I will be completing school next year and would be joining college. My Goal in my life is to become a nutritional Researcher and want to Research deeply about food and nutrition. My aim is to introduce nutritious food to the poor and the needy and educate them on healthy food practice.

If I was not here, I would have been isolated and neglected. I might be have been working as a child labor and struggling from pain and lack of proper shelter. I may not have proper clothes to cover my body or proper sandal to protect my feet. I would have been untidy and would not have people to love and care for me.

Brief History

Bhumika is known as Deena at home. Her father is an agricultural laborer and her mother is completely paralyzed and is bedridden. The family was living in absolute poverty and was unable to take care of Deena. She was left on the streets to fend for herself. She was brought to us by a local pastor in their neighborhood else she could have landed in some wrong hands. In her neighborhood anti social organizations are very active. They sometimes forcefully take away young people and train them as their troops.

My Experience

I am fortunate, lucky, proud, happy and privileged to be in this home. I have got the best parents, good food, good bed to sleep, best clothes to wear and beautiful home to stay. I have lot of freedom in this home.

After coming to this home, I used to be very scared and later on I got attached with my mom and dad. They showed me the real love of parents. When I came here I didn’t know a word of English.  They have taught me how to speak and same time I learnt in my school how to read and write. After I came here I could unearth my talents. Now I can sing, dance, draw, paint and play sports. I have achieved prizes for running race, lemon and spoon race, needle and thread race etc. While I was in Grade 5, I won 1st prize for drawing and 2nd prize for singing.

Now, I am on the verge of completing my school. I feel excited and thank God Almighty and my parents for bringing me up to this level. My aim is to become a dietician and nutritionist in hospitals. I want to help the patients by advising them to eat good nutritional and healthy food.

If I would have not been in this home. I would have not known my talents, I wouldn’t have good education, beautiful home to live, clothes to wear, good food to eat, comfortable bed to sleep, best school that I am going and best parents that I have now.

Jochana & Rochana

Brief History

Jochana’s parents worked in fields for daily wages. Her mother died while giving birth to her sister Rochana. Her father married another woman. Her step-mother did not want the children to live with them. As a result, she was referred to us by the local pastor. Jochana was the first to join our home. We found it very difficult to speak with her as she did not know a word of English or Tamil. Later, we knew that Jochana was asking God to bring her little sister to our home. When God brought her sister to our home in a year’s time, she started to understand that there is a God who answers her prayer.

My Experience

I never taught I would be loved so much. To be honest, the love I receive here is beyond my imagination. I am grateful to God for providing me with such wonderful parents who are always there for me. I can go to them for anything. I don’t have to worry about my food, clothing and education. In spite of my naughtiness and trouble I give them their love for me never fades. I am disciplined if I am wrong. I don’t have to ask God for better parents. I don’t have to go searching for parental love and care. They are like a strong hold for me. I love my family.

The first thing I have learned after coming here is to speak in English and Tamil. I go to one of the top schools in the city.  I have received prizes in sports and extra-curriculum activities such as running race, throw ball, Kho-kho, Singing, Dancing writing and oral competition, painting, drawing and fashion competition in school. I have received the ‘best artist award’ in Grade 8

I have also won laurels for my academic excellence. I received an award for scoring 100% in science in Grade 10 and received the best student award in Grade 11.

I have also acquired good skills in communicating and interacting with people. I have learned how to be responsible and independent. I have learnt how to be artistic and express my view through art.

I am very excited that I would be entering College next year. I want to do become a dietitian. I would love to do a research in diet and nutritional care. After finishing my college I would love to create awareness about nutrition among the underprivileged. I would love to abolish malnutrition in rural areas and educate poor people to eat a healthy diet which is less expensive and locally available.

If I was not here, I would have been working in a farm or field cultivating Rice or Corn for daily wages. I would be working in the scorching sun day and night. I would be an illiterate and would not have a proper shelter and place to dwell in it. I would be not have good food or proper clothing. I would not have proper rest and sleep. I would be mentally stressed because I have to think what to do for the next day. There will be no discipline in my stand of living.

Brief History

Geeta’s parents are agricultural laborers. Her father is addicted to drinking and would spend all the money on liquor. Due to this the children used to starve for days together. He eventually died. Her mother could not take care of the Geeta and her younger sister were referred to us by their village Pastor.

My Experience

I feel like a light which has been taken out from the bush. I am secured, well-guarded cared so much, loved so much, so grateful and thankful to mom and dad for everything. I have never felt that I would be cared and loved like this. I feel I am special to them. When I think of their love and care, I become happy in sad times and felt comforted in my worriedness and felt safe when I fear. I love them so much which can’t be expressed. After coming to this home, I feel really privileged to go to school every day. I have learnt to communicate in English and Tamil. I have learnt to sing, draw and be a disciplined child. I have received so many awards in arts and crafts like drawing, match stick work, cotton work, pencil shaving work, dhal work, and in sports like Athletics, long jump, shot put, badminton, throw ball, kho-kho and carom board.

If I was not in this home, I would be like a light hidden in a bush. I would not have known what life is and what family is all about. I would feel so scared instead of feeling secured and safe. I would be working instead of going to school. I would feel really miserable and depressed thinking life is all about suffering, and pain without any comfort.

 Brief History

Mita parents passed away when she was young. She and her older sister were under the care of her relatives. The relatives found it hard to take care of the both the children. Hence, Mita was referred to us by one of our church members in Chennai. When she arrived in our home, she was very malnourished and also had hearing problem. She had puss oozing out of her ear. With continuous treatment and healthy diet, God healed her hearing problem and also became healthy. She is very smart and studies very well. She wants to become a School Teacher.

I feel so comfortable being in this house. To me it’s like a palace. I am so happy and it made me forget my past History. Now I am safe and loved by mom and Dad. I feel fortune enough to get this Love, Care and Good Education etc. I love singing and like to play badminton and throw ball.

If I was not here, I would be leading a miserable life and I would not ever have a dream to become an achiever in future. Surely I wouldn’t be safe.

Brief History

Rochana is the younger sister of Jochana. In October 2003, I had an opportunity to go to Orissa through our Church. I tried calling the pastor who referred Jochana to meet her grandmother but could not as his number was not working. While we were in Orissa, God helped me to meet the pastor as we were coming out of a coffee shop. I shared about Jochana’s wish and the pastor agreed to take me to her village. When we went to Jochana’s grandparents’ home and informed them about her wish, her grandmother accepted with one condition that she also travels to Chennai to see Jochana. We got her the train tickets and brought her Chennai. Rochana joined our family a year later after her sister Jochana. She was very unhealthy when she arrived but today she looks beautiful and healthy. She wants to become a school Teacher.
